Filling your tires with Nitrogen instead of traditional air is becoming increasingly popular with the average driver. Nitrogen has long been used in the aircraft industry, on the race car circuit, and in the military. Now everyday drivers are realizing the benefits of Nitrogen tire inflation.

Here are the top five benefits of using Nitrogen to fill your tires.

Maintain Consistent Tire Pressure – Using Nitrogen instead of air to fill your tires allows the proper tire pressure to be maintained for longer periods of time. This is important for adding to the life of your tires as well as increasing the safety of the vehicle. Maintaining the proper tire pressure also improves gas mileage therefore saving money in fuel costs for your vehicle.

Protect Your Tires and Rims – Oxygen in compressed air is responsible for water vapor or moisture that builds up inside a tire. This moisture triggers inner oxidation of the rubber which can lead to tire wear or even blow-outs. Nitrogen in your tires eliminates the build up of moisture and prevents inner wheel corrosion.

Tires Run Cooler – The moisture created by Oxygen in tires causes friction within the tire as it spins. This friction causes heat to build up and makes the moisture turn back in to a gaseous state. This then increases the tire pressure. Replacing the Oxygen with Nitrogen in your tires will eliminate the moisture, prevent the friction and heat, and maintain a more consistent tire pressure. The tires will remain cooler and the tread will wear evenly.

Safety – Nitrogen is a safe gas to use in your tires. As mentioned earlier, it has been used by the airline, race car, and trucking industries as well as the U.S. Military for years.

Good for the Environment – Nitrogen in your tires helps to maintain the proper tire pressure for longer periods of time, thereby increasing your gas mileage and requiring less fuel to be consumed. You are also preserving your tires by protecting them from premature treadwear, resulting in fewer tires being thrown away. Nitrogen tire inflation can help save our environment from pollution caused by the burning of fuel and can help save space in our landfills.

Choosing Nitrogen tire inflation for your vehicle can help maximize your tire\’s life, your vehicle\’s safety, and put money right back in your pocket by improving gas mileage and preserving your tires for longer periods of usage. Not only that, filling your tires with Nitrogen instead of air is the environmentally friendly choice.

Be sure to ask about the availability of a Nitrogen Tire Filling Station at your tire or automotive shop during your next visit. It will be your first step to an improved driving experience.

Tire review is the number 1 magazine that helps the tire manufacturing industries, which publishes more featured articles about tires.

There is also online magazine from Tire reviews. You can see the international tire news in their web site. You will be able to know the sudden price changes in tire from the Tire reviews. For instance, the current news in tire reviews is the increase in passenger and light truck tires up to 5.5 % in Japan. The medium truck prices will increase up to 7 % and the OTR tire prices will rise up to 10 %. Bridge stone winter tire prices will also increase in Japan.

Tire reviews provide information about various tire news, tire business problems, how to handle the problems in tire business, business tactics for tire dealers. They also take surveys relating to tires that will help the manufacturer to improve his business. You can get tire reviews by brand.

Passenger tire reviews:

You can get the tire reviews for passenger tires under four categories. They are ultra high performance summer tires, ultra high performance all season tires, Grand touring summer and Track and competition DOT. The passenger tire reviews will help to understand how much the product is useful to the people. You can decide whether your product is good, better or average from the Tire reviews.

The tire review helps to compare the performance of various tires of popular brands. Therefore, the Tire Reviews help in increasing the sales of any particular tire that gets favorable response in the tire review.

Light Truck \ SUV tire reviews:

The light truck tire reviews show which tire is quieter in operation and which the people find one more useful. This will help the tire manufacturers to improve the quality of their product so that they can improve their sales. If any tires used in light truck found defective then it will help the consumers to avoid the product. Therefore, the Tire reviews are useful to both manufacturers and consumers.

Tire reviews help you to select a suitable tire for your vehicle. The tire review is an independent consumer survey aimed to help the drivers to share their own experience and thereby help other drivers.

Pirelli tire reviews help to get the most suitable tire for your vehicle. This review reveals the performance of tires in numbers like five for excellent, four very good, 3 good, 2 satisfactory and 1 for poor. Therefore, you can compare the various brands’ tires and select the best one. The review also classifies them as dry, wet, snow, handling, comfort, noise, tread wear etc. If you want to get tires that are suitable for dry conditions then select the tire that gets five in the review in Dry column.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found there are more than 8,000 traffic accidents every year resulting in death or serious injuries due to tire failure. While some tire failures may have been prevented because of driver errors, some tire failures are the direct result of a manufacturing defect or design defect. Some tire manufacturers have known about the dangers of the tires for years, but have failed to properly warn consumers of the risks. Some experts have attributed tires in the U.S. to be the worst in the world.

Tread Separation Causes Fatal Accidents

One of the most common tire failure occurs due to tread separation. Tread separation is the result of the plies of a tire separating from one another.

An assembled tire is exposed to high temperatures and pressure to cure the assembly, which bonds all the layers. A steel-belted radial tire may have a steel belt incorporated into it to have greater puncture and impact resistance. Unfortunately, the rubber compounds cannot stick to the steel belt addition if the manufacturer does not cover the steel wires before using them in constructing the tire, which makes it possible for tread separation in all steel belted tires. The possibility of tread separation becomes greater as the speed of the vehicle increases.

Currently, light truck tires and passenger tires do not use new technology that has been designed to prevent tread separation from occurring. This new way to manufacture tires has been available for years, but it has not been used because it adds expenditures to production. With better-designed tires, a nylon cap adds a layer between the steel belt and the road to help the tire better withstand moisture and roll with more stability.

Multi-Piece Rims Pose a Serious Threat

Another type of tire failure that can occur is when a multi-piece wheel is used. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration wanted to ban multi-piece rims, but the tire and wheel industry sponsored an education program at work and ultimately avoided the ban. OSHA guidelines require using a safety cage during tire mounting operations, but after the wheel is removed from the safety cage, accidents still happen. Posters that were designed for the education program are now in most service stations and tire shops, but this educational program has allowed manufacturers to avoid complete liability by foisting some liability on to businesses, who in turn pass costs along to employers and their injured employees. Though a single piece wheel that would avoid multi-piece rim explosions has been around for decades, the design has not been widely used.

Sidewall Zipper Failure

When tires are being inflated, the sidewall of the tire can explode, causing a sidewall zipper failure. Sidewall zipper failures occur because the sidewall design and manufacturing. Deflating a tire can add stress when the tire is re inflated and cause a blowout. Manufacturers deal with this tire failure by issuing warnings instead of changing the tire designs. Inflation of the tire can be another cause of bead failures, and the explosion from bead failures can result in serious injury, or even death. Bead fractures usually occur at the splice joint of the tire, which, combined with the low-pressure explosion, causes the trajectory of the rim and the tire to sever limbs, cause brain trauma, and smash facial bones. Tire failures can occur when there is a high-speed spin-off failure, which occurs when one of the two rear wheels is stationary and the other wheel spins without restraint due to a design defect. One uncommon type of tire failure is ozone cracking in which small cracks on the rubber’s surface come from atmospheric ozone which destroys the sidewalls. Manufacturing defects are normally to blame in cases of ozone cracking.

Tire Blowout Injury

Tire blowout injury occurs when motor vehicle tires rapidly lose air causing a loss in vehicle control and, potentially, a rollover accident. Tire blowout injury can be catastrophic as tires deflate in an explosive manner, severely compromising or destroying the tire’s integrity. A number of consumer advocacy groups concerned about the dangers of tire blowout injury have urged the government to enact more stringent protocol on tire design, production, and maintenance.

Tire blowout injury is sustained when tire blowout causes the loss of vehicle control which makes vehicle rollover and collisions with other objects more likely. People are at a greater risk of tire blowout injury when traveling at higher speeds. Being in a less stable vehicle is also a major factor which contributes to tire blowout injury. SUVs are more likely to be involved in tire blowout accidents for several reasons. SUVs are narrower and taller than other passenger vehicles; therefore they are less stable on the road. When tire blowout does occur, SUVs are much more likely to rollover causing more serious tire blowout injury. SUVs are also more difficult to control after tire blowout which causes the risk of more serious accidents and tire blowout injury.

In 2000, national concern about tire blowout injury peaked as the Firestone-Ford scandal unfolded. Firestone radial tires on Ford Explorers were found to be especially prone to tread separation, which caused numerous cases of tire blowout injury and death. In August 2000, Firestone-Bridgestone recalled 6.5 million defective tires and in May 2001, Ford recalled 13 million defective tires from their vehicles. Consumer group research shows that tire blowout is not particularly unique to one type of tire or vehicle, meaning that other tires and vehicles may pose an equal threat on our roadways. There are several causes of tire blowout injury that are highly preventable. It is nearly impossible to create a tire that has absolutely no risk of causing tire blowout injury, but there are many things that can be done to reduce the risk of tire blowout. The causes of tire blowout include road hazards, maintenance issues (such as under-inflation, overloading, tire mismatching, excessive wear, and inadequate inspections) and tire design or manufacturing defects.

Tire blowout injury is often due to negligence on behalf of tire manufacturers or tire repair and maintenance professionals. If manufacturers were obligated to create a safer and more sturdy tire, use a more strict production and inspection process, and better the overall design of the vehicle and control systems, then tire blowout injury could be prevented. The likelihood of a tire blowout injury could be reduced if the service professionals implemented a more stringent tire repair and maintenance protocol, and also amend the design of the tire.

Preventing Tire Failure

Tire failures can be prevented with proper maintenance, but in some cases tire failures are hard to detect because of a manufacturing or design flaw. By knowing what to look for, you may be able to prevent unnecessary injuries. Signs to be aware of include:

* Cracks in tire sidewalls

* Tire vibration, indicating a misalignment, etc.;

* Treads which are unevenly worn down (indicating improper inflation) or very worn down;

* Bulging sidewalls (indicating weakened areas).

Have You Been Injured by Faulty Tires?

If you have suffered injury due to faulty tires, blowouts, or related defects, you may wish to contact a qualified attorney who can advise you of your legal rights and options. A professional attorney with experience in crashworthiness can help you to take legal action and get compensation.

It’s not the RV tire we ride on… it’s the pocket of air inside… it holds us up and gets us down the road.

What is the science behind our RV tires? Why is it that these tires suffer from sidewall cracking, and rot? Is there anything we can do to prevent this premature degrading of our RV tires? Why is it that we do not suffer the same issues with the tires we put on our automobiles… the ones that we drive every day? When we understand the answers to these questions, I believe we will then get better service life out of our RV tires.

I am thinking that the solution to the above questions has to do with two things:

1. Understanding how a tire is made.

Every modern RV tire will contain emollients such as carbon black and specific waxes that are designed to protect their sidewalls against the effects of UV (ultra violet) light, and ozone.

The manufacturers of all modern tires realized as early as 1910 that adding carbon black to the rubber compound that makes up the RV tire will protect this tire from the effects of UV… what may not be known by the general public, is that this carbon black material must be reapplied periodically to prevent UV damage.

Blocking the tire from the sun using a good tire cover is also recommended. It is just like sunscreen for our bodies if you must be in the sun, sunscreen works up to a point. However being in the shade will give a better protection.

RV Tire manufactures also use wax to help keep ozone from drying out and cracking a tire. This wax does not need to be re-applied periodically like carbon black. It will work its way to the surface by the process of using the tire in a normal fashion. This brings us to the 2nd reason for the premature degradation of a tire.

2. Understanding how individual working conditions effect the longevity of a tire.

Our RV tires are designed to roll down the road. If they are used in this manner and kept clean, sidewall deterioration becomes less of a concern. This motion, of rolling down the road, allows the wax to work its way up to the surface of the tire, and offers protection against ozone contamination.

To sum this up, there are three things to do that will prevent early tire damage to your RV.

1. Keep the tire clean.

Heavy buildup of mud and dirt will act as an abrasive that prevents a proper waxing process. Using a mild soap and water solution along with a soft bristle brush will, if applied on a regular bases, remove a fair amount of ozone buildup.

2. Flexing, or using the tire.

It is the flexing of a tire while driving down the road that will work the waxes to the surface of your sidewalls… this flexing results in an expansion and contraction motion of the tire. As long as new wax works its way to the surface, you will have good protection against the effects of ozone oxidation.

3. Apply a carbon black component to your tires.

After you have your RV tires clean, you will want to apply a carbon black product like 303 Aerospace Protectant. As far as I know, this is the only product that will work as advertised in combating UV.

It matters what you put on your tire:

Another thing to consider is the fact that any tire dressing that contains petroleum products, alcohol, and/or silicone materials may further damage the tire due to a possible chemical reaction with the antioxidant material in the tire.

Bottom line, these two additives, carbon black and wax, will protect an RV tire from premature drying and cracking.

However, as I stated above, when a tire is not used, this wax additive will lose its effectiveness. This is why we don’t see the same type of premature weathering on our automobiles. We simply use them enough to keep everything in balance. Unfortunately, RVs can sit for prolonged periods of time. So, we must take the above additional steps to protect our recreational investment.

Tires are one of the most misunderstood and under-appreciated parts of a vehicle. Although assumed by many just to be a cushion to keep your wheel rim from getting damaged, in reality your tires are only point of contact between a high-speed moving vehicle and the road. Consequently, how much control you have over your car depends greatly on your tires. This article will explain what tires do for your car, the consequences of poorly maintaining your tires, and what you can do to make sure your tries are reliable and safe.

Every aspect of a tire is carefully designed to provide the greatest amount of control over your car. The type of tire rubber is carefully chosen to be soft enough to provide a good grip on the road, but tough enough not to wear down too quickly. As the rubber of the tire rolls over the pavement, it transmits force between the tire and the road via friction to generate traction. This is made possible by friction, which can be described as the stickiness between any 2 surfaces. Friction is what allows traction (the ability of the tire to grip the road), allowing you to speed up, slow down, and steer the vehicle, thus keeping control over your car.

Consequently, it is in your best interest to keep the contact area between your tire and the pavement as broad as possible. Here, tire pressure is important. Over-inflating a tire can cause it to lift too high off the ground, so that only the center of the tire is in contact with the road. This causes less traction (and thus less control over a moving vehicle), and uneven wear in the middle of the tire tread. Under-inflated tires let the tire ride to low, causing excessive wear to the outer ribs of the tire tread, and increasing the chances of a blowout. To maintain proper tire pressure, check your car owner’s manual (or look up the tire specification on the internet) to find the correct tire pressure. Check you tire pressure frequently (once a week or so) to make sure they maintain to correct pressure.

Uneven wear on your tire treads can also slowly decrease the contact area with the pavement over time. Unfortunately, even the position of the four tires on the car and cause uneven wear over time. To avoid this, rotate the tires to different wheel positions around the car periodically (in the USA, every 10,000 miles or so). Not only is the safer, it will make your tires last longer and save you money over time.

Keeping your tires properly balanced is also important. Your wheels should be perfectly perpendicular to the road to provide the greatest contact surface area with the pavement, and thus the best traction and control over your car. If your wheels are at an angle, even a very slight one, it decreases the contact area with the pavement, reduction traction and control, and crates uneven wearing on your tires, increasing the chance of a blowout. A good way to maintain proper balance is to have the balance checked whenever you have your tires rotated.

When your tread wears down, several bad things can happen. First of all, it generates less friction between the tire and the road, providing less grip on the pavement and thus less control over a moving vehicle.

Second, tire treads are specifically designed, when your tires roll through standing water or heavy rain, to channel water up and away for the road and provide a drier surface for your tires to grip the road. When tires treads wear down, these water channels shrink, creating a smaller channel to lift and push water away for the pavement. This increases the chances of losing control of your car when driving through water or heavy rain, especially at high speeds.

Finally, the older and more worn the tires are, the greater the chance that one of them will burst while the car is moving. Although merely an annoyance at low speeds, the danger caused by a blowout increases dramatically at higher speeds, and at highway speeds can be lethal. In extreme cases, the tire tread can separate from the tire wall and wrap around the axle, causing you to lose all steering control, collide with another car, go off the road, or even roll over.

Proper tire maintenance is an enormously broad topic, and this short article has provided just the very basics of maintenance and safety. If you think you have any questions about whether or not you need to have your tires rotated or replaced, take your car to an auto mechanic or garage.

When it comes time to replace your vehicle’s tires, tire size is very important. If you ever switch to a different sized tire, you could damage your vehicle. Before switching tire sizes, do some research to ensure that it can be done safely.

Most drivers will not need to change their vehicle’s tire size. Stock tire size is what your vehicle was designed to use. These are some vehicle components affected by changing a tire size:

•Both the speedometer and odometer are calibrated based on the height of your tires. Taller tires would make the speedometer read slower than actual speed. Shorter tires would show a higher speedometer reading.

•Newer vehicles have internal computers that base calculations on the tire’s height. Components, such as Anti-lock Braking Systems, could fail with a different tire size.

•Stock suspension could have additional stress with a taller tire, resulting in faster wear and/or failure. For substantial increases in tire height, you should upgrade from stock suspension.

Despite these concerns, some circumstances do require a tire size change. For someone looking to modify their vehicle, the wheels are often the first place to start. Stock wheels are often plain and don’t attract much attention. When people switch their vehicle’s wheels, they upgrade to a larger diameter stock wheel. These people get a lower profile tire that is close to stock tire height. Most tire industry professionals recommend no more than a 3% height difference from stock. Of course closer is better.

Sometimes there is poor selection in a vehicle’s stock tire size. With common tire sizes, each major tire manufacturer offers at least several choices. Some rare tire sizes are only manufactured by a few companies. If those few tire choices don’t match your climate and driving style, you might need to change tire sizes. You can often find a similar tire size with more choices.

If you insist on switching tire sizes, double check with some tire industry professionals. Your car dealer will likely try to persuade you from altering any stock specifications, but ask anyway. Check with some tire shops, but beware they might put the sale as the first priority. Another good place to ask advice is in automotive forums. Find a good forum specific to your vehicle type and ask their opinion. You’d be surprised how easy is it to find someone else who has already tried a tire size. Be aware that people on forums aren’t necessarily industry professionals.

You can do your own research and try using a tire size calculator featured on various automotive websites. These tire calculators allow you to compare specifications of different tire sizes. They display the tire height, width, RPMs, speedometer difference and more. These tools aren’t exact as a tire size can slightly vary from one tire model to another, but they are very good tools. So use a tire size calculator as a general guide. Then confirm your calculations with a tire industry professional. You can also find the exact measured height of each tire model if you visit the tire manufacturer’s website.

When possible you should use your vehicle’s stock tire size. Don’t switch just because you find a good price in a different size. A lot of things in your vehicle were designed for the stock tire size. If you do have to switch tire sizes, make sure the size is safe for your vehicle.

In 2008, near 200 million strips old and scrap tires were produced in China, only 11.5 million strips of which had been retreated.

In China, many consumers misunderstand the tire retreat industry. For example, they hold that it is unsafe to use the retreat tires; the retreat tires do not wear resistance, drive fewer mileages and unsuitable to the high temperature etc. Besides, partial Chinese media report the tire retreat industry untruly, such as small workshops, illegal operation, time bomb and sudden huge profits etc. Under the influences of these factors, Chinese tire retreat industry has showed the slow development tendency for more than 10 years.

For the pollution and recycle utility of the old and scrap tires, China is short of corresponding regulations and policies at present. On the one hand, the mass burning and deserting the old and scrap tires will cause serious environment pollution. On the other hand, the mass burning and deserting the old and scrap tires will result in the serious raw material shortage for Chinese old and scrap tire processing enterprises.

Although the financial crisis affects the global economy, yet it is an opportunity for Chinese tire retreat industry. John. Liu, an analyst in the rubber and tire industry of China Research and Intelligence, holds that more consumers will tend to choose the economical retreat tires under the influences of international financial crisis. Besides, the influences of the international financial crisis on Chinese tire retreat industry will be a wide range. Some small tire retreat enterprises will be closed down because of the backward technologies and poor operation capacity. Some strong tire retreat enterprises, especially the affiliated tire retreat enterprises of the tire manufacturers, however, will develop fast. The concentration of Chinese tire retreat industry will be enhanced.

Chinese tire retreat enterprises have two major operation models: first, the tire retreat enterprises purchase the old and scrap tires and then sell then after retreat; second, the tire retreat enterprises retreat the old and scrap tires from the transportation companies and then charge the retreat fees from the customers. The enterprises of the former operation model usually lack the old and scrap tires. Therefore, there is a new development tendency in Chinese tire retreat industry, namely, many tire manufacturers are engaged in the tire retreat industry making the most use of its resource advantage. Compared with the simple tire retreat enterprises, the affiliated tire retreat enterprises of the tire manufacturers have more and huge advantages.

The world’s three tire giants Michelin, Goodyear and Bridgestone had entered Chinese tire retreat industry, in which Michelin is the earliest one involved in Chinese tire retreat industry. In September 2005, the first tire retreat factory of Michelin in China went into operation in Shanghai, which means the tire retreat plan of Michelin in China was officially set up. In January 2009, Bridgestone (China) Investment Co., Ltd. officially set up the tire retreat development department. Chinese domestic outstanding tire manufacturers, such as Triangle Group, have or planning to enter the tire retreat industry and explore the profit growth point.

John. Liu holds the views that the tire retreat volumes will be increased by 30% to 15 million strips in 2009 compared with 2008, which will reach to 19 million strips in 2010. From 2009 to 2010, Chinese government increases the investments in the fixed assets like railways and highways so as to maintain the economic growth. Meanwhile, the demand and holding volumes of the construction machinery in China are increased. It is predicted that the retreat tires of the construction machinery will become the hotspot in Chinese tire retreat industry in recent two years, which is worth to pay attentions for the investors.

Anything you can do to make your car tires last longer will cut down the cost of driving your car. Sure, you’ve heard so much about driving habits that can increase your miles per gallon that you’re tired of hearing it, but what about increasing your miles per tire change? The way you drive, and the way you take care of your tires can go a long way toward saving you money. And as a bonus, most of the ways to make your tires last longer will also make your car safer to drive, and improve your fuel economy!

Here are three tips to help you get the most life out of your car tires:

Keep your tires properly inflated

Keep your wheels properly aligned and balanced

Turn your wheels only while the car is moving

Each of these things will make your tires last longer, and I’ll tell you why.

Proper Inflation

Maintaining correct air pressure in your tires has been discussed as a way to improve gas mileage, so much that it almost sounds ridiculous. Overemphasized or not, it is still true, and it also improves the life of your tires.

Check your tire pressure at least once a week, and add air when the pressure is below the manufacturer’s recommendations. Check the owner’s manual for your car for the correct pressure.

If you find that one or more tires need air often, have your local repair garage check it for slow leaks, and fix them. A slow leak might be a warning sign that the tire will suddenly go flat, so spare yourself the trouble. Fix it before it gets worse.

And don’t overinflate the tires. There is a school of thought that if a little pressure is good, more pressure must be better, but this is not the case. An overinflated tire will bulge along the tread surface, so that only a small strip down the center of the tire is actually in contact with the road. This will cause the tire to wear prematurely down the center, and it also reduces traction because you have less rubber on the road.

If a tire is overinflated, which can happen when the weather gets warm or if you move from a low altitude to higher altitude, let some air out. Make sure your tires are inflated to the correct pressure, neither too low nor too high.

Alignment and Balance

You usually get your tires balanced and your wheels aligned whenever you buy new tires, and that’s good. However, if anything happens to unbalance your tires or to misalign the wheels in between tire changes, you should have it corrected right away.

Misaligned or unbalanced tires will wear unevenly, and that always means that they will wear out faster. They will last much longer if they are always properly balanced and aligned.

If you have a flat tire repaired, or even just a slow leak, make sure the tire is rebalanced before the mechanic puts it back on your car. They may charge extra for this service, but it will save you money in the long run. The tire will last longer, and you will get better gas mileage than you would get with an unbalanced tire.

Your wheel alignment should stay correct between tire changes, but if you drive on rough roads, you should have it checked regularly. You should also have the alignment checked if you had some unusual shock to your car’s suspension, such as if you hit a curb or a large piece of debris in the road.

With proper wheel alignment, your tires will last much longer. You will get bonus benefits of better, safer handling, improved fuel economy, and longer life of your car’s suspension and steering components such as tie rod ends and ball joints. The extra strain on the system from misaligned wheels also causes undue wear and tear on these parts as well as your tires.

Steer Only While Moving

Back in the days before power steering became commonplace, everyone knew this: It’s much easier to turn the steering wheel while the car is moving than while it’s stopped. In case you’ve never had the pleasure of driving without power steering, it’s worth the trouble to demonstrate this for yourself.

With the car parked on a slope, such as a driveway, and the engine off, turn the key to the “on” position without starting the engine. This will unlock the steering column. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left. It’s hard, but a person of average strength can do it with a little effort. Now, release the brake a bit to let the car roll slowly, and turn the steering wheel all the way to the right. It’s still difficult without the engine running, but much, much easier than it was when the car was not moving.

The difference is friction. When you turn the steering wheel and the car is not moving at all, you are rubbing the front tires sideways across the pavement. This rubs the tread off the tires and onto the pavement. No, you won’t see a flat spot on the tire after one bout of parallel parking, but the cumulative effect of doing this day after day is taking thousands of miles off the life of your tires.

Whenever you have to maneuver at low speed, such as getting in or out of a small parking space, make sure the car is moving – at least a little bit – while you turn the steering wheel. Even if the car moves as little as half a foot while you turn the steering wheel from one extreme to the other, you will save a great deal of wear on your tires.

And there’s a bonus here, too. If you turn the steering wheel while the car is stopped, where does the power to turn the wheels come from? Right! From the engine, and from the gasoline that you paid too much for. Steering only while moving will save you gas, as well as saving wear on your tires.

Conclusion

Much of the cost of owning and driving a car is related to your choices in how you drive it. Yes, you must replace your tires every so often. But you can make it a little less often, and make your expensive tires serve you a good deal longer, if you take proper care of them.
